In order to bring youths closer to the reality of the Internet Exchange Points, since 2012 MIX has given life to the MIX Schooling project, organizing informative meetings aimed at secondary school pupils in its datacenter.
The so-called Millennials, from an early age, are constant users of the internet. Entering a datacenter like MIX gives them the chance to hear the “noise of the Internet” with their ears and see what is behind social profiles, online shopping, chatting with friends, etc.
Teachers visiting MIX have the opportunity to show students that subjects taught in a classroom environment do not remain merely abstract, but have tangible implications to be considered when choosing a future profession.
The meetings take place in one morning and are divided into two moments:
- classroom session – the MIX Network Engineer presents an overview of how networks work and the characteristics of an IXP and answers students’ questions
- guided tour of the MIX DC – at the end of the theoretical session, the students have the opportunity to see closely the beating heart of MIX, where the equipment of the main ISPs and content providers are installed.
During the school year 2018/2019, more than 600 students and teachers took part in the project.
