MILAN INTERNET EXCHANGE DEPLOYS NEXTONE MSX FOR VOIP INTERCONNECT

Public Interconnection Site Uses NexTone to Extend High-Quality VoIP Services across ISP Members

CORE NEWS FACTS

·         The Milan Internet eXchange (MIX), the primary Internet exchange point in Italy, has chosen NexTone’s Multiprotocol Session Exchange (MSX) to enable Italian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to offer Voice over IP (VoIP) services.  MIX is a not for profit organization designed to promote the development and use of the Internet in Italy by improving the interconnection between different ISPs operating in the country and abroad.

·         As a key component of NexTone’s IntelliConnect™ System, the MSX works with NexTone’s Real-Time Session Manager (RSM) to provide MIX with the visibility and intelligence to exchange, optimize, secure, and bill for voice sessions (or calls) flowing through its interconnections.  The MSX is designed to interconnect SIP and H.323 networks, which are the primary protocols used by networks capable of carrying VoIP and multimedia traffic such as video and instant messaging.

·         In addition to enabling MIX to quickly introduce its new VoIP interconnection service, NexTone’s technology also ensures consistent VoIP quality of service for all ISPs who interconnect through the MIX site.

·         MIX chose the NexTone solution after an extensive evaluation of session border control (SBC) products, and a six-month trial deployment.  MIX selected NexTone based on the flexibility of its solution, its support for secure partitioning between ISP networks, and its ability to ensure service quality end to end.

·         Industry analyst group Infonetics Research projected that the SBC market will grow from $86 million in 2005 to $613 million in 2009, and worldwide service provider revenues for VoIP and IMS equipment will more than double between 2005 and 2009, from $2.5 billion to $5.8 billion.

COMMENTARY

·         Valeria Rossi, director of MIX – “With the development of a scalable and neutral VoIP platform in a consolidated interconnection environment like MIX is, MIX takes a concrete step towards making the harmonization and interoperability of VoIP technically feasible.  NexTone’s comprehensive IntelliConnect system will allow MIX to quickly offer new, high-quality VoIP services and extend these services to all of our Members.”

·         Dan Dearing, vice president of marketing, NexTone Communications – “NexTone’s global success is fueled by the rapid adoption of inter-carrier VoIP peering and interconnection, which allows its customers to route traditional voice minutes over IP—a significant advantage to deploy VoIP efficiently and cost effectively. NexTone’s technology also provides its customers with policy management and enforcement capabilities to ensure guaranteed service delivery, geographic service redundancy, and overall network performance within their interconnect environment.”
