CLARIFICATION ABOUT THE OUTAGE OCCURRED ON MAY 5th, 2008

 

On May 5th, 2008 a power outage of about 62' occurred at MIX.

It has been the outcome of a sequence of unexpected events, as follows:

• at 17:15 a serious power outage occurred in the Caldera area;
• immediately MIX's UPS took care of the datacenter;
• as expected, diesel generators started in a few minutes;
• due to a misconfiguration in the line setup, the switch to autonomous power failed;
• at 17:28, when the batteries were fully discharged, the AC section of the datacenter was powered off.
• MIX personnel at the site immediately started troubleshooting and performed a temporary repair;
• at 18:30 the standard service was fully restored.

On May 7th at 05:00 an extraordinary maintenance, of about 60 minutes, has take place to ensure the proper working of all the power delivery infrastructure.

In its 7 years of activity, MIX had two service interruption (of 36 and 62 minutes, respectively, on a total amount of more than 60,000 working hours). This last service interruption has been caused by a human error during installation, but the datacenter infrastructure is anyway oversized with respect to the current power needs and guarantees the continuity of the service even in case of extended power outage, as happened in 2003 during the Italian nation-wide black-out and in other situations, that had no impact on MIX.
